Veterans ship model donated to museum By Chris Must, Perth
EMC EMC News William McVey, who
passed away in 2005, had decided in retirement to make a model of a
corvette, similar to one of the warships he served on during the
Second World War. His wife Diana has presented the model to the
Hall of Remembrance, a local museum dedicated to the memory of area
service personnel who served in the major wars of the 20th century,
and up to the present day. McVeys wife recalls that he joined the navy at the age of 16, having lied about his age. During the way his ship was torpedoed and he survived to be rescued. He had the distinction of serving not only in two wars, but in both the navy and the army. McVey enlisted in the army to join his friends who went off to the Korean War. McVeys model corvette was completed in about 1997. Corvettes served a vital role throughout the Second World War protecting transatlantic convoys from attacks by enemy submarines." |
